Dear Friends:

While there are descriptive articles describing the benefits of CST, there
is little supporting evidence using the paradigm of scientific inquiry.
There are no randomized clinically controlled trials. Dr. Upledger has done
lots of research; however, as he is the founder of CST, there would be some
question of his reliability using strict research protocols.
Carolyn Green, in 1999 (Complementary Therapies in Medicine 7(4):601-607)
found that published research on CST was low-grade evidence using inadequate
research protocols.

Rogers in PHYS THER 1998; 78(11):1175-1185, found that 2 practitioners
separated from each other by a screen had low intrarater and interrater
reliability.

I am sad about this. As a CST practitioner (and publisher of several case
studies in MIDIRS where CST was instrumental in breastfeeding
rehabilitation), I know that something good comes with CST. To illustrate: I
watched the torticollis of a 2-month old baby resolve right in front of me,
while the baby was s2s on her mother's chest. Hard to refute the evidence
of my own eyes, and the mother's joy, and the baby's newfound ability to
nurse in any position.

RCTs are but one form of scientific inquiry. The intention of the researcher
influences the findings and the conclusions. That CST has not had a
meta-analysis in no way lessens its power and effectiveness in clinical
practice.

Is it the CST that helps? Or is it putting open, gentle hands on someone
suffering, and listening to them tell their story, complete with emotional
release, that makes the difference? Is it creating a safe environment and
giving complete attention and focus to a troubled dyad the key? Who can
separate this out?

Remember that love can not be studied in a RCT, yet we all know its value!
CST is in the energetic realm so that measures of another science are not,
in my view, relevant or appropriate.

warmly,
Nikki Lee
(who loves using CST with dyads in need of breastfeeding rehabilitation)
