Hi, Ladies two questions:

This first may have some of you laughing at my naivety, but I hope someone
will take the time to explain the details. The better we understand the
“politics,” the better we can work to figure a way to overcome it.

Joint Commission is supposed to protect patients by checking to be sure that
all hospital policies and practices are in the patients’ interests. (Right?)
So why do they allow the distribution of formula marketing bags? Can’t
they just “make” the hospitals stop giving out bags?

My other question is on Baby Friendly. Step 6 says “Not giving infants any
food or drink other than breastmilk unless medically indicated.” So would
a hospital that routinely checks blood glucose on every baby between 1 -2
hrs after birth and then gives formula for three feedings unless 10 ml of
colustrum is immediately available automatically not pass that step?

Hey, we’re making progress VERY slowly here. We just got them to eliminate
glucose test drinks for every baby upon admission last year! 8200 births/yr
is a giant institution to turn around. As I’ve said before the goal is to
live long enough to make it happen. Insights you can offer about politics
will help us. I keep reminding myself that the Grand Canyon wasn’t carved
in a day and we’re making inroads inch by inch (s2s being used more often,
kimono wrap robes in the queue, staff education on-going).
