Nursery RNs (Levels II and III) say that paced feeding takes too much time. They have 6 babies to feed in what? one hour? and do it every 3 hrs (4 hrs if they can fill him up enough that he sleeps longer) plus meds, monitoring, diapering, charting, etc. And they say a baby who takes too long to feed is a poor feeder.
So what can you do?
I'm not sure these Level II and III RNs have ever cared for a normal, Level I newborn.
One Level III RN today warned a new mom that "...some babies like to use the breast like a pacifier!" ... said in a tone of voice that implied it is something not to be allowed.
