I remember when I became a Lamaze certitifed childbirth educator...Since I was an up-to-date Leader, I decided to study the breastfeeding portion of my education by reading Ruth Lawrence's latest edition slowly and carefully. The more I read, the more grateful I was both for my League background (which had given me an excellent grounding in what we knew - and not much was Evidence Based, by golly!) and for Dr. Lawrence.

After reading that book from cover to cover (hey, it was 1987, a lot thinner than now!) I remember thinking, "Yes, you can mess around with breastfeeding and a lot of things will work. But the way League teaches it is the way it was meant to work, and the baseline for what works best. Human beings are resilient, we can do a lot of things differently and it will still work.BUT! the best for baby and mom in 2000 is the same as it was eons ago!
