The color of the areola is usually depend on the skin complexion
I see very blonde fair skin Scandinavian types and the color of the
areola many times is a very faint pink, almost no color at all. The
color of the areola has nothing to do with breastfeeding.
As for her nipples not standing out, there are all kinds and shapes of
"nips" and breast are the same way. I would not suggest shells at this
young age and would only suggest shells late in a pregnancy.
IMHO
Jan Aken RN IBCLC
Who have see many a breast and "nips" in 36 yrs in OB.

Subject: question about 16 yr old nipples

Hello Lactnetter,

I am a LLL Leader from Newburgh, IN. I received a phone call today from
a
mother calling for her daughter. Her daughter is 16 years old (never
been
pregnant)and is conscious of her breasts. (She covers up in Gym class
when
undressing/dressing in the locker room and she has participated in
beauty
pageants) Her daughters nipples are flat, doesn't protrude when she gets
cold or stimulated and the areola is light in color. The mother had
read
that breast shells might help.
I read to her from the Breastfeeding Answer Book, 2003 edition, page 472
about shells not shown to be beneficial and on page 471 about some flat
nipples naturally protruding from hormones of pregnancy and childbirth.
I'm assuming with pregancy her areola will darken as well. It seems I
read
somewhere??? that areola color does not affect lactation. Is that
right?
So for you ladies who may have experience in this, is there something
else
I should have said, mentioned or suggested. Her daughter wears 36C and
38B
size bra.

I'm nomail so please email me at one of the addresses below.

TIA,

Yvette Wassmer, LLLL, CLC
