Nancy, Marsha and Karleen all know that ILCA's by-laws contain a requirement
that it not accept monies from a company that is failing to met its
obligations under the WHO Code. It has been that way since ILCA was
created, 26 years ago. Other than ILCA affiliates (like USLCA, CLCA and
LCANZ) I wonder how many other corporations and organizations have such a
requirement **in their governance structure.**

The by-laws driven, fiduciary-obligation, decision-making objectives of the
Board of Directors of a not-for-profit int'l membership organization are
entirely different from the bottom-line driven, profit-motive,
market-share-desiring objectives of a for-profit company that makes bottles
(whether or not their ownership structure involves shareholders). As Rachel
points out -- whether we like it or not -- in the USA, where the WHO Code is
not legislated, a company can opt not to meet its obligations under the
Code.

There is plenty in the Lactnet archives about ILCA's decision-making
vis-a-vis certain companies. I'm heading to the ILCA conference in San Diego
today .... I invite anyone else who is at ILCA to grab me, and I'll be happy
to make the explanations again, in person. ILCA is criticized for a lot of
things, by members belonging to the organization, and those who do not. (It
is nice that ILCA gets back-pats on some stuff, too.) Many disagree with
ILCA's decision-making vis-a-vis the Code ... many agree ... and that, as my
grandmother used to say, is what makes a horse race.
