WIC programs vary in their breastfeeding efficacy from county to county,  and 
from state to state. WIC was totally responsible for the increase in  
breastfeeding rates in the early 1990s. However, in the 21st century, WIC is as  
vulnerable as any other government program to the power of commercial  interests.
 
 
The most recent issue of JHL has an article about WIC. The very first  
sentence in the abstract is "Recent reports indicate that breastfeeding rates  
continue to be dramatically lower among WIC participants, compared with other US  
mothers."  The 2003 GAO report reported similarly.
 
WIC has the potential to be an enormous force for breastfeeding; WIC peer  
counselors in my city are a valuable resource for many that have nowhere else to 
 go.
