Could it be that the Haberman sometimes works as a way of transitioning the
baby to the breast much because of the same reason that cup, syringe, spoon
feeding "work" they are all feeding the baby but don't encourage them to
develop an improper suck (ie. bottle suck) and they also "suck deprive" the
baby with the idea if we don't give them anything artificial to suck on- they
might be more prone to suck on the breast? Despite having used the Haberman
several times over my career as a baby nurse, I have never heard the
mechanics described as accurately or succinctly as done by Barbara-thank-you!
 I want to say however, that although  perhaps not effectively, babies will
suck on the Haberman. What happens at that pt. -is the flow being cut off?
