I also get frustrated with women who tell me they are going to *try* to
breastfeed. It is a self-defeating attitude. Trying implies the
possibility of failure, and I prefer not to think of it in those terms.
You either breastfeed or you don't.

I heard a wonderful response to the comment *I tried to breastfeed but I
failed.*
*Oh - the baby died?*
I wish I could remember where it came from - sounds like a Doctor
Jack-ism, doesn't it?

What works for me is to compliment the mother on how long she actually
DID breastfeed, even if it was only for one day, saying something like,
*You gave your baby something really special, something only YOU could
give.* Making her feel good about what she HAS done often encourages her
to do more the next time around.
