Okay, I have to add my 2 cents' worth. I, also, am finishing a BSN (the
first hurdle in a BSN/MSN program, going into midwifery). I will be
graduating in Dec. (assuming I can complete the work). Our junior level
Ob rotation was the quick 7 weeks stint. Senior rotation, however, is
14 weeks, with two 8 hour shifts per week (I know...still less than
full-time. Thank goodness for that...I have the full load of course work
and 3 kids, also). Regardless, my guess about the statement from the
faculty that LC work is not "clinical" enough may be a recognition that
LC is a profession unto itself, just as nursing is. Of course, a good OB
RN will be able to help a mom with breastfeeding, but one needn't be an
RN to be an LC, and vice versa. As a component of the Ob rotation, I do
understand it. As the exclusive rotation for a nursing student, I'm not
sure I get it.
As for my school, I made my passion of breastfeeding known early on in my
educational career. My Ob instructor, on several occasions, asked me in
class if the information was accurate (it was...she is also passionate
about breastfeeding), and if I could add anything. Perhaps we need to
take more of an initiative when we have something to add.
Lee-Ann (when will Oct. 24 and the exam results arrive?)
