Maureen Minchen talks about this in her fourth edition of "Breastfeeding Matters" but unfortunately the studies are not referenced, on page 140 she says: "This restriction is the result of some studies showing liver cancers (of a type not seen in humans) in mice fed large doses of gentian violet for over 18 months of their 24 month life span."She also notes that it is used in manufacturing purple candies.

I personally find it to be the fastest, easiest and by far most effective way to treat nipple thrush for mom and oral thrush for baby.
