Sharon--The one mother I can most easily remember with nipples like you
describe (she had two) did not breastfeed comfortably for more than a
month.  I think the biggest issue is that this is pretty much virgin tissue
and extremely tender because it has never been exposed.  What worked for
this mother was mostly time, and coincidence or not the tenderness started
easing up when she started using making sure the folding surface was dried
very well after feedings by using a hairdryer.  We were careful to use warm
air not too close but she did feel that making sure the skin was not at all
moist before the nipple tucked back into itself helped a great deal.
