When I first read it, it reminded me of years ago - I would do these little baby fairs and became friends with the vice-president of the local SIDS alliance.  She hated the sleep positioners.  Their official position on them was if used incorrectly (too tightly against the baby) they could compress the diaphragm just like sleeping on their stomach does and should not be used.  So this doesn't surprise me at all.  It really feels like 'what took them so long to get rid of them'.
