Flagyl is OK for BOTH term and preterm infants!!!!  As a Neonatologist we use
Flagyl full strength IV for infants suspected of having NEC.  I have a hard
time believing that 2-5% of the maternal dose, passed through her breastmilk
to the infant is more of a problem than a full IV dose directly to the
infant.  The AAP (1994) rates Flagyl as a "drug to be used with caution" for
theoretical reasons - it is not contraindicated.
