It is very disturbing that this doctor would prescribe Bromocriptine for
mastitis or a breast lump or even lactation suppression (for which it
WAS indicated).

The Therapeutics Section of the NZ Ministry of Health "Prescriber
Update" No 11, February 1996 pp8-9 (nine years ago) in a small
article "Lactation Suppression - Pharmacological Treatment Not
Advised", showed that Bromocriptine was neither favoured nor fully
effective and it recommended conservative management such as
cold packs and analgesics for suppression - not breast inflammation
or lumps!

Serious adverse effects, including death, are well documented
regarding Bromocriptine use and rebound lactation even after a 14-
day treatment may occur.

A very close look at the cause/s of the "mastitis" and "lump" are
essential to optimise breastfeeding and / or relactation in this case.
Let's hope she takes that option or you may be able to guide her
about gradual toddler-led weaning.
