For those who are interested in the U.S. BFHI:
I just had a nice long chat with Minda Lazarov. I wanted to get her
permission before broadcasting her address and fax over the net. You can
write to her at 4443 Pecan Valley Road, Nashville TN 37218 or Fax
615-251-0111.
A mailing just went out yesterday to all hospitals that signed letters of
intent. She has been as frustrated as anyone with the slow pace. In the
mailing, the hospitals will receive a form to fill out indicating how far
they are in the process to becoming baby friendly. Based on the information
shared on the forms, follow-up phone interviews will be done. She hopes that
formal assessments will begin in August (during World Breastfeeding Week as
Jan B shared). The criteria are complete, and will be included in the
mailing.
You'll be pleased to know that there are several hospitals in addition to
Evergreen that are ready to be assessed. So the good news is that we DO have
baby friendly hospitals in the U.S. We just need to get assessments in place
so they can receive their designation.
Minda hopes to get a page on the web soon. She has someone working on one.
So we'll need to watch for it.
From sunny and relatively warm Pennsylvania (finally!),
Judi Lauwers
