Forgive me If I have shared this story before. My first child was a baby
who would only nurse in the lying position.
She latched better and I rested better and I had not the slightest idea that
she would not nurse in another position when the need arose.
When she was about 14 weeks we journeyed to Texas from Georgia about 800
miles. This was 27 years ago and we were not as strict with the car seat .
The plan was baby in car seat and then for nursing I would sit in back with
baby for the feeding while Dad drove. She did not like the plan. There was
no way that I could nurse lying down in the car. She got more and more
fussy as the miles rolled on and would not even try to nurse in any other
position.
Finally my husband stopped at an interstate rest stop, spread a blanket on a
picnic table and suggested that I lie down and "rest", baby nursed very
happily. Dad went off to get me some water and came back with a container
of cold water and a smile and twinkle in the eyes. He says " Well, my
dear, you set a fine table".
When we got to Texas my mother helped me to introduce other ways to get the
baby to nurse in other than the lying position.
She eventually began to accept the changes.
She nursed for 18 months, sucked her thumb till age 5 and then went on to be
a fine bi-lateral , intelligent girl with many skills and graduated from
college with honors. No lasting effects.
I learned to vary the positions early on with the other three.
Dear husband still has the sense of humor and supportive nature that helped
make it all work.
