Hi all,
I've been wondering about this since I first saw it mentioned. At our
hospital we've been teaching our new moms to position their nipple/areola as
a 'horizontal sandwich' so that baby gets the most areola as possible (we
teach asymmetrical latch as well). Depending on the baby's positioning
(football, cradle, etc), sandwiching the areola based on a "C-hold" might
end up in a 'vertical' sandwich which is all but impossible for baby to
latch well with... so we teach moms to think of what they want to go into
the baby's mouth as a sandwich and position it so that the baby can get a
good mouthful of the 'sandwich'. We actually have the fathers or other
helpers practice with positioning the nipple and areola. From the
description given of the 'tea cup' hold it sounds like the same thing. Has
anyone else heard of the 'horizontal sandwich' technique (I swear I didn't
make it up myself... got it from somewhere)? Is the 'tea cup' hold
something different?

Regards,
Cindi Swisher, RN
