<This is typical of much of the copy I've read for formula companies. It's
all
part of the art of persuasion. <
Martha,
Don't forget the art of subliminal suggestion!! It goes like this:
"Of course, your milk is the best thing for your baby, BUT if for some
reason you cannot breastfeed, e.g., you are taking antibiotic, you are sick,
your baby has jaundice, or the sun is shining and you don't want him to get
too much vitamin D, then we are here for you!! "

This puts doubt in the mind of even the most breastfeeding dedicated mom.
Hmmm, I am taking antibiotic. Maybe I should not be breastfeeding.

Or, there are the handouts about nutrition and breastfeeding where they tell
you that if you eat a balanced diet, your breast milk will be even better
than Artificial Milk. They even give you a list of about 4,352 things that
you should consume every day just to make sure that your milk is full of all
the nutrients your baby needs, and if for some reason you cannot eat all
those different things, because you don't have elephant sized stomach
capacity, then, you may have to think about giving Simiyuck or some other
WLP (White Liquid Poison)....(ok, that one is too extreme.) If you don't
eat 24 sardines a day, then you may have calcium deficiency which may harm
your baby, and cause you to spend the rest of your life in the orthopedic
ward in a body cast. ( sorry, but I hate sardines and if I thought I had to
eat them to breastfeed, I might have been working for the f-word companies
today......formula....why what did you think I meant?)
And I love the references to the fact that the new infant foods are more
suited to the new millenium. More suited to what? The bank accounts of the
companies, I guess.

I often talk about this stuff to pregnant parents. It really opens their
eyes to advertising!!

Esther Grunis, IBCLC, who is sooooo behind in Lactnets because of a worm
that attacked my computer......be careful of any and all attachments!!
Tel Aviv, Israel, where we are finally getting wonderful rain and thunder
and lightning!!
