that's a great point about finding out what the child care facility's
guidelines are. I was lucky enough that I could send a ziplock baggie or
food storage container of cubes, usually with a note on the bag that each
cube ~1/2 oz and specifying to not ever heat the cubes in the baggie or
tupperware I sent them in--only in breastmilk storage or feeding bottles,
and let the provider use tongs to take out as much or little as needed, with
no or minimal waste. they didn't have to be in the bottles ready to feed.
but one day the caregiver in the infant room had thrown out some of my
breastmilk, citing some food storage guideline about "if not used within
24hrs of defrosting" or "if not consumed by the end of the day" or...
something.... (I don't remember, it was a couple of years ago and my
pregnant brain isn't functioning right now), but whatever it was, was
absolutely not applicable and I was very unhappy my liquid gold was poured
down the drain. so I asked the director of the school for written policies
re: breastmilk storage and updated and clarified what needed to be updated
and clarified! I also asked for a change of wording from "formula" to
"breastmilk or breastmilk substitutes" where feeding policies implied that
the normal contents of a baby's bottle would be formula (didn't mention
EBM). it got changed to "breastmilk or formula", that's a start!
