Diane Wiessinger wrote a (well illustrated) article for the Journal of Human
Lactation a few years back. It is called: "A breastfeeding teaching tool
using a sandwich analogy for latch-on" JHL 1998; 14(1):51-6.
It's a dandy article and a dandy concept. I use the sandwich analogy in my
latch-on lecture: Re-thinking the teaching vocabulary of Latch.

 Diane and I will both be presenting on Latch Technique at the ILCA conf. in
Boca Raton next summer. I continue to think that latch on and positioning
are the most sophisticated arts I practice, and I re-fine my thinking about
them continually, based on my experiences and on new research that tells us
more about the physical structure of the breast, milk production, and
letdown.

There are so many ways to be right. I think that we don't want to go crazy
over the 'teacup' hold or any 'new' idea just for the sake of having some
sexy new trick. The smart thing to do is to look at each new trick as just
one more tool in a flexible repertoire that allows us to tailor our
assistance to individuals, whose varied breast and nipple shapes can present
varied challenges while learning to breastfeed.
