At our institution we have a physicians standing order, that a dexi be
done if the infant hasn't nursed for 5 hours.   If the dexi is within
normal limits and the baby is asymptomatic, ie, no signs of acute
hypoglycemia, we can usually stretch the no feeding time to six or seven
hours.

Usually this prolonged fasting stages occur to babies whose mothers had
medication, but then I've seen it in babies whose mothers had no labor
medication.  Has anyone ever done a study to correlate the effect of
medication to the feeding response of the newborn?  If so, would you
share it with me so that I don't have to reinvent the wheel?
