To Beverly Rae,

About your infant with bloody stools a few questions then suggestions.

1. How much blood are we talking about streaks or large amount.
2. Have the stools changed at all More loose, more frequent, fowel smelling
.....
3. Were any tests done to try to determine cause before treating?
(cultures, stool studies, endoscopy,???)
4. Was the gastroenterologist a pediatric GI?

Suggestions:
1. Find cause before treating: babies with such symptoms need stool
studies including:
fecal leucocytes (presence of white cells indicate inflammation
in colon).
stool culture and test for C Difficile: an infection is often
cause of bloody stools in babies.
a good exam of baby's rectum: is there a fissure?? common cause
of bleeding in baby
a good family history of significant allergies such as skin
conditions, athsma,...
a colonoscopy to visualise the mucosa of the intestine and obtain
biopsies: the appearance of the biopsy gives clues as to what is going
on in the bowel

Hirshprungs is not a bad idea, can prsent that way. The test is a
suction rectal biopsy. Actually not traumatic at all (little tube used
is smaller than a pencil in diameter)and finding out is a lot less
traumatic than beeing treated for the wrong thing (ie not BF when you
could) or not finding out.

Let me know if this helps and private email if you want to go in to
further details
Maryelle
