Joylyn,

The following is a reference from the American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition. It is a supplement / review article titled:
Developmental Ecology of the Neonatal Intestine

http://www.ajcn.org/content/vol69/issue5/#SUPPLEMENT

I skimmed through it a bit last night, with my bf cap on of course and found
it lacking on the bf front. Although I haven't read it in detail, my first
impression was that it was lacking on the importance of bf in establishing
normal neonatal intestine flora. I then saw in the intro who the sponsors of
these articles were, en voila:

"The symposium was made possible with the financial support of the following
sponsors: HJ Heinz Company Foundation, Mead Johnson Nutritionals, Nestle
Food Company, Ross Products Division . Abbott Laboratories, and Wyeth
Nutritionals International. The American Society for Nutritional Sciences
provided valuable support in the execution of the symposium, and Wyeth
Nutritionals International generously provided the financial support for
publication of the supplement. "

Now can't get more "wrong" than this hey?

However, I don't know whether this precludes it as a useful reference on the
flora of neonates. It does have a section on aquisition of gut microbiotica
in the neonate, the origins of these flora. I plan to read it, but with
caution due to the heavy sponsoring.

Hopefully someone can point out an independent article which covers your
question?
