I must admit I did not know about the high doses of this vitamin potentially
being a lactation suppressant. Someone else emailed me saying high doses had
a diuretic effect. When I did an internet search of "B vitamins and milk
supply" none of that came up.
It would worry me to have a mother taking such high doses. I realize B
vitamins are water soluble and maybe we don't worry about them as much as
fat soluble vitamins, however, a person's body can handle only so much at a
time, right? Also, I don't think anyone knows how many doses, how many days
a mom would take it. Also might a mother use it longer than directed, on her
own?
My biggest concern, and I think this bears re-stating, would be the
potential harm it could do an infant. The side effects are pretty scary.
Just because there was no report of a problem via breastmilk, that is likely
because there have been few cases of a mother using this and being studied.
The mother originally in question was weaning 6 month old twins, and was
gradually decreasing her nursing frequency. So I am thinking, *if the mother
used this vitamin in high doses,* she should discontinue the nursing
altogether. I hope she continues with the gradual weaning method (or even
better, continues breastfeeding, if at all possible.)
