It still makes me sick to my stomach when an uninformed doctor tells the mom
we don't do these for at least the 1st year, she listens to the doctor and
quits breastfeeding.

This happened to me, two pediatricians wouldn't touch my son, whose latch
felt like sandpaper to me (and he was my 2nd, so I knew it was wrong). The
ENT said he wanted to wait until at least 8 months old so he could use
anesthesia and sutures. I had done my research and couldn't understand why
he'd choose that over a simple scissors clip before my son was 6 weeks old,
when the frenulum was so thin and immature. I gave the ENT an earful about
how at 3 weeks old the only thing going into my son's mouth was my breast
and my milk, at 8 months he'd be picking up everything off the floor so
wouldn't our infection risk be higher?

I ended up paying out-of-pocket at a pediatrician's office 30 minutes away
for the clip, which bled only one drop and made nursing instantly more
comfortable and effective. I, too, feel terrible when I think of the less
aggressive mothers who wouldn't have been as persistent as I was.
