Sorry for the long subject line...feeling mischevious
this morning ;)
To add to Nikki's post about pitocin and the fluid it
is suspended in...we need to remember that *most* moms
whose labor is induced or augmented with pitocin
**also have epidural anesthesia**. One of the most
common, and dangerous, hazards of epidurals is
maternal hypotension (a drop in mother's blood
pressure, potentially leading to shock and fetal
distress). Before mothers even have the epidural
placed, many already have IV's that have been dripping
merrily away since admission. THEN, when Mother
elects to have an epidural, she receives ANOTHER liter
or two of fluid, infused rapidly, to prevent
hypotension from the epidural.

We have a fine L&D unit, but many, many times, both in
our high-risk OB and our postpartum units, I have seen
mothers seriously overloaded with fluid from
uncontrolled administration of IV fluids during labor.
Now that I work in lactation I see its effects on the
breastfeeding dyad in the form of puffy, edematous
areolae (leading to latch difficulties) and delayed
onset of lactogenesis II.

If you want to mess up breastfeeding, mess with the
birth...sigh.
Carole
