I am a Lactation Consultant working in a public health unit in Lethbridge,
Alberta, Canada. I received a call from a mom who is pregnant and due in
approximately 2 weeks. Her question was regarding the safety of
breastfeeding after the removal of silicone breast implants from both her
breasts approximately 2 years ago. She gave me permission to post my
question to you.
This mom has breastfed previous children, with the implants in place. She
reports that the silicone from both implants leaked out into the breast
tissue causing extreme soreness after she had weaned her last child. When
the implants were removed she knows that some breast tissue was also
removed, but she is not sure what disturbance there was to the milk glands
and the ducts. She is going to try and contact the surgeon who removed the
implants and the breast tissue to ask that question.
Has anyone had experience with a woman who has breastfed following the
removal of implants and/or following leakage of the silicone into the
breast tissue? I would appreciate any comments or advice that you can pass
on to me as I support this mom.
This mom describes continued aching within the breasts since the surgery.
At this point in time she is not sure if the aching is related to the
surgery and/or the silicone leaking into her breast tissue or more related
to the tenderness associated with pregnancy.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Diane Hill
