Step. Away. From. The. Mini-Consult.

If the IBCLCs facilitating a hospital-hosted open-to-the-public
breast/chestfeeding parent peer gathering can remember this rule, then the
concerns about liabilities and charting and reporting are nil. Because
there won't be any lactation consultation going on.

There are IBCLCs all over the place who regularly run sessions for the
parent peer groups for organizations where they once were a counselor. I
did so, years ago. Keep the session going as a conversation between the
parents, not an "ask the expert" session. If you do present a short topic,
keep the information-sharing GENERIC and GENERAL ... of interest to ANYONE
... but frankly, the less talking the IBCLC does, the better. Cuz this is
a parent gathering, not an ask the expert session ...

HIPAA/HITECH should be respected ... including privacy for such things as
sign-in sheets.

Visitors who come to the meeting thinking they will GET a (free) consult
should be told up front how and where they can get that service elsewhere.
"Welcome! Today we hope you'll share your stories about how you coped with
teething. This is a chance for you to talk to and hear from each other! If
anyone has a specific clinical concern about breast/chestfeeding, see me
after the session and I can share some resources with you for where you can
get lactation care. Now -- to get us started -- how about we go around the
circle and introduce ourselves and our babies?"
