Hi Jean,
I agree with Nina that the color can be considered normal. However, in light
of her history, it might be informative to culture it. I would think the
best way is to get a sort of clean catch specimen, whereby mother has very
clean hands, and breasts, expresses the first few drops or milliliters of
colostrum, then catches a few more drops or mls in a sterile container. She
could have MRSA or something.
I also agree with Nina that the mother's treatment with sulfa is not the
usual recommended treatment, and I also wondered about the mother possibly
being allergic to the first line antibiotics like dicloxacillin.
I would recommend that she begin breastfeeding without restriction, as any
other mother would. Of course, I would advise her to be alert for symptoms
and report immediately.
I would also wonder about her hgb levels (I admit I'm not looking at a
reference and not sure if 11.9 is too low within a pregnancy) and fatigue.
Has she been thoroughly checked out for various anemias, nutritional issues,
etc? I was thinking a good nutrition/holistic practitioner/herbalist could
maybe help boost her overall health. I was reading recently about marsh
mallow root that a mother was taking, and I beleive it helped immune system,
has plenty iron and minerals, vitamins etc? I am no expert here, and could
be wrong about this herb, but surely there are others and some good whole
foods that could help.
