Interesting how we each have our own descriptions and "routes" to get
there, but in the end we are all aiming for the asymetric latch. One
thing I have been doing is avoiding telling moms to "tickle baby's
lip". If she is brushing her nipple upo and down against both baby's
lips, she may be on the lower lip when baby opens. Then by the time she
wams the nipple upward (or higher) to achieve the asymetric latch, baby
has closed its mouth again. Now I tell her to just tickle the upper
lip,and then her nipple is much more in position to latch effectively if
hers is a baby who opens and then closes quickly. I think it also
encourages baby to "reach up" with the mouth a little more and often
yields a wider mouth.
When an experienced mom is using holds/positions that are less likely to
end up with an asymetric latch, I say something like: "Breastfeeding
doesn't change, but our understanding of how to make it work the best is
changing. I've found that with this approach, we are avoiding many of
the problems we used to see such as baby's lower lip being turned in.
Since using this approach, I rarely have to talk about pulling down on
the chin to "pop" the lower lip out."
