Dear Kathy, point well taken re: doctor bashing. To my mind it is OK to
repeat a specific situation, but it is NOT ok to paint all members of any
group with the same brush, whether the persons are MDs, anesthesiologists,
midwives, NPs, LCs, LLLLs, moms, grandparents and so on.

We all know a person in our own personal field that we don't agree with.
We wouldn't dream of doing things the same way for a specific situation.
Just today on Lactnet, Darlene Breed said "never say never and try
anything to save BF". I know in the years I've done this, I have tried off
the wall things in desperation - sometimes they have worked in a particular
situation, sometimes not.
and if you heard what I had tried you'd say "well I never!!!!!! So many
things are involved (mom's needs, messages mom is communicating, my
knowledge base, my experience level, amount of time each of us has to
invest in the crisis of the moment). Sometimes HCPs answer or suggest out
of the limitations based on these factors and sometimes based on arrogance
or annoyance, But the point is we all do! I'm not the same person who
advised moms in 1967, I'm not the same person I was yesterday (I got a
better night's sleep last night) and so on.

I agree with Kathy, we need to be more circumspect when handing out
criticisms. Remember KA & KB, list mothers, say don't write anything that
you don't want to see on the front page of the NY Times. Because Lactnet
is intimate and chatty, I think many forget this and say things 1 to 1700,
just the same as they would talk one to one to a close friend or colleague.
We do need to mind our manners (and flying typing fingers) so no one has
to wince when they read Lactnet, unless it is really deserved.

I'm also afraid many of us are dumping our frustrations on Lactnet, when we
are really talking to the wrong people (person).
Communication with the source of the problem is the answer, not bitching
about them to all of us. And before I get flammed - I know it is useful to
bitch and get it off your back, but maybe you need to pick an e-mail friend
and do it less publically :-)

Now I will climb down off the soap box, need to drive the swimmers to swim.
 Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
