Yes! You describe what I meant - that babies may lose the seal if
mothers use breast compression during sucking bursts. And no, it's
certainly not necessary, and not helpful, for the compression to be
continuous. In fact its the "alternate" nature of the compression
which works best to stimulate another let-down. Research on this
would be very good in providing more answers.

Meanwhile, I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say, "May we not
be getting similar let downs and release of milk with lad back
breastfeeding, albeit not the only answer but breast compressions
have concerned me for a long time" Do you mean that laid back
breastfeeding achieves the same efficacy (maximizes milk transfer) as
alternate massage or breast compression?? This is intriguing! Can
you explain.....?

I ask because I'm not the biggest fan of laid back breastfeeding
unless everything is going really well.... if the mother needs to
"help" the baby to breastfeed due to a specific problem, then milk
transfer is easier for the baby when the mom is sitting UP - because
she can see better, she has more control over the way she presents
the breast to the baby, gravity helps because the baby is _under_
the breast instead of nursing uphill, and the mother can have the
baby in the most advantageous position for him, ie he uses less
energy holding his own head up, he goes straight on to the breast,
rather than bending the nipple/areolar sideways to accommodate the
top-down position and still breathe etc etc....

I have been reading with great interest about breast compressions. In
some cases I really see that it works during a bust or in between
bursts. However I am finding that too many mothers seem to be
milking their breast and think they need compress all the time. They
are losing the latch and breaking the babies seal. Have we ever
really looked at this in a research based methodology.
Just a thought. Where is the research. We do see it improved milk
flow when pumping but is that our only research and does that really
equate to what happens with breastfeeding?
