Melody: I think that your idea of patterning the baby by gently rolling out his lower lip just before nursing will help. Here is another idea that has worked well for me. Assuming that the baby is in a cradle hold on the mother's right arm, have her position him so that his mouth is a little to the left of her nipple nipple and then have her pull him onto the breast as soon as he opens his mouth wide. As she *drags* him on his lower lip will naturally roll back. This can also be adapted for use with the cross-cradle hold. If she prefers a football hold, then the baby will be initially positioned so that his mouth is further to her side. side. I like to have mothers practice new positioning ideas with a baby doll first to build confidence. Good luck!
