Some thoughts about biting from bedside experiences...

Unfortunately, the hospital where I work uses long,
narrow bottle nipples with a relatively fast flow.
More times than I can count, I have been asked to
consult with breastfed babies who have been given
these teats for supplementation (for whatever reason),
and now they are BITING at breast. Several times, the
Kardex sheet reports that baby got bottles, even
though Mom has initiated and desires breastfeeding.
These babies often approach the breast with a VERY
tight jaw and are leaving moms with damaged nipples.

Not only does the narrow teat fail to encourage them
to have the wide jaw gape needed for effective latch,
what I am seeing more and more are babes who cannot
keep up with the rapid flow of the bottle and clamp
their jaws down/bite to keep from drowning! The flow
from the bottle doesn't even require the baby to suck;
it just runs on out if held at an angle. This teaches
the baby behaviors that are comletely contrary to
effective, comfortable breastfeeding, and, to use the
vernacular, royally screws thing up! (Anyone familiar
with the term FUBAR?)

Oh dear...is this a pet peeve? Time to go...
