Subject: breast itchiness

I'm working with a mom who's been experiencing extreme itchiness on her
breasts near her areolas when she breastfeeds. She says it's so extreme
that
she has to take baby off the breast when it happens because she can't stand
it. She denies symptoms of yeast. This has been going on for about 3 weeks.
Has anyone heard of this? Any suggestions?

Carol,

I had this myself, on one side, it would itch terribly only when she nursed,
streaking all the way up my breast, starting when baby #2 was about a year
old. Then, a month or so later, I developed eczema on that nipple only.
Ruled out all other possible causes, and finally weaned on that side only
(the other side's been going strong for another 2 years...) and eczema
disappeared. I always attributed the eczema, which I never had with baby
#1, to a less-than-perfect latch on that breast from a baby with mild low
muscle tone. Hope this helps,

Julie, LLLL in NJ
