I had a young Native American mom come in today. She is nursing her first
child, age 9 mo, and came to ask me about weaning. The baby has been
totally breastfed until 6 mo or so, then gradual addition of solids, is
still mostly bf. She said the baby was biting her, especially at night
when she was tired and mom was trying to get her to sleep. We talked a
bit about biting and things to do to prevent it and teach the baby that
biting is a no no. Told her it was her baby and she could wean if she
really wanted to, but that I wasn't going to give my "permission" . I
talked about the need for br. milk for first year, problems w/ abm, etc.
She decided to try the no biting tips I had given (talk to the baby
sternly, end the feeding, don't try to nurse if baby doesn't really want to
<she's tired and wants to sleep but baby doesn't> don't laugh when baby
bites and so on).
Then she asked for a refill of her prescription for Xanax (a
benzo-diazapam). She has been taking 0.25 mg maybe once every 1-2 weeks
for severe panic attacks. I asked her when I had filled the last
prescription of 10 tabs. It had been over 3 mo. I asked her if she
realized how little she was needing to take, and that the breastfeeding was
probably calming her panic attacks. She grinned and said that when she
felt one coming on she would feed the baby and it would usually calm and
sooth her, avoiding the need for any medication. Just one more reason for
her to keep nursing!
Incidentally, I had a dissagreement with the psychologist over this mom.
He felt she should go on amyltriptoline for an underlying (non-suicidal)
depression instead of taking xanax in the doses mentioned above. That
would probably have necessitated weaning the baby, and neither the mother
nor I wanted that to happen. Seemed pretty dumb to wean to switch to a new
med when the present one was working well, and seldom needed. Then he
insisted the medication was contraindicated for bf. Well, granted, it
isn't one I would lightly prescribe, but she was taking small, infrequent
amounts and the baby was obviously doing well both physically and
developmentally so I stuck to my guns and she is still nursing.
BTW - any other tips to stop an older baby from biting?
