kind of a side question, but one that is tied to your lament... I was up with
the IBCLC i'm mentoring under today....

we were discussing how does one talk to a mom who you know will most likely
have supply issues because of body conditions like PCOS or obesity? How do
you explain that she may not be able to breastfeed fully/exclusively without
making her feel bad about her body? Are you brutally honest, sharing the
facts - and risk damaging her self-esteem and confidence in feeding her child
or do you skirt the issue?

where is the happy medium?

had a mom today who is overweight, delayed lactogenesis II, supplementing 1
oz of ABM every other feed... baby is 1 oz less than she was last friday(down
7.7%) (and this is with ABM supplementation...)

We work with military moms and try hard to support the enlisted families to
stick with breastfeeding for all reasons, but financial is a big one... the lower
enlisted are barely getting by most times...

Frustrating when they hand that stuff (ABM) out like candy.

and then there was the mom who mentioned the OB gave her a script for
ortho tri-cyclen and said it was safe to use while bfing...

and the mom whose 6 day old baby is now only getting EBM in a bottle
because the mom thought that it's the same as breastfeeding and as long as
it's breastmilk.... hopefully she went home and put the baby back to breast.

and then there's the civilian hospital i delivered at 6 months ago and the
stories I'm hearing of BF babies being given formula in the nursery while
they're waiting for the pediatricians to make their rounds. They're violating
their own hospital policy for doing that. I would like to find out if they gave my
son formula, because i'd be inclined to sue them. I supplemented here and
there with my daughter because I didn't know then what i know now and I'm
proud of the fact my son has never had a drop.... i think i'd be devastated.

sorry for the rant!

i'd really like to hear your response to my question if you get a chance...

thanks,

anne hinze
