Forgive the cynic in me, but I'll bet that many hospitals will only hire LCs
who are also RNs because that person will not just be functioning as an LC.
They want someone who is LC on paper, but will insist that said person spend
lots or all of the time actually doing RN work which doesn't involve
lactation work.. One local hospital has one LC on staff in the hospital and
she cannot just go around checking on moms as an LC. She is also taking temps
and everything, and many moms report that they never get seen by the LC
because she is having to be the "RN" first. The moms and the staff seem
frustrated by this. I believe it is very common around here. Hospitals get to
say they have an LC, but LC/RN functions as RN/
