Hi Everyone,

I first searched the archives and the subject turned up absolutely no
results. I have permission to post.

I am helping a 45 yo mom with a 2 yo nursling who is her first (and will be
only) child. She reports that she has lost most of her hair with no
follicular activity to regrow the hair. The dermatologist wants her to use
Minoxidil (trade name Rogaine) in a 2% topical solution--not orally--because
the current theory is that this is a genetic condition that will improve with
this drug. She has postponed doing this for as long as she could but is now
warned that if she doesn't stimulate the hair follicles, they will never
function normally again.

She has been instructed to wean before she can begin the medication. She
would prefer to continue nursing her son to a natural weaning and has
curtailed her work for the past two years because he cannot be without her
long enough for her to pull a full shift (she's an ER doc).

I have already given her the info from Hale, which included the one study. A
question about the info in Medications and Mothers Milk--does the theoretic
infant dose listed refer to topical or oral application of this drug? I
suspect it is the oral ingestion, so would love to get an idea of what the
theoretic infant dose would be for topical application so this mom can take
that info into consideration.

Her current perspective is that she will wean if there is any suggestion of a
risk to her child. I am apparently not that very convincing on the "lack of
breastfeeding" side of a risk/benefit discussion.

Any suggestions, info, or experiences are much appreciated.
