I have a mother who has an unusual appearance to her areolae. She reported
that it happened in the last trimesterof pregnancy. A ring around the areola
formed, with lighter color than the areola. Is has a slighlty bumpy
appearance, and covers about half the areola (the inner half being the light
color and the outer half is the darker color). It doesn't itch or have
exudate. Her nipples were inelastic the first few days and difficult for the
baby to grasp initially. It was painful for the mother to hand express. Baby
did latch, however. She experienced somewhat reddened, sore nipples, and now
at 5 days of life breastfeeding is going well and she has more than enough
milk.
I wanted to have an explanation for the light color change. Any ideas on what
it is?
