I love Virginia's phrase - "what works is what works"! Like pacifiers,
nipple shields can be a tool of the devil or a gift from heaven. We had a
mom - whose mother worked in a pediatrics office! - who used a shield for
four months with a tongue tied baby. When the shield got eaten by the dog,
the mom went to plain naked breast - and that baby never had anything but
mom's milk at the breast in all that time. Mom's supply was not compromised
and she did very little pumping because the baby was able to drain the
breast well WITH the shield. So I agree that there should not be timelines
on shield use: whether it's needed for the mechanics or the confidence it
can be a very useful tool when used properly.
