Sue I think in this case you should use all your other skills first.
Note output, appearance, distribution of fat, skin turgor, colour,
alertness, achievement of age-appropriate developmental skills, and ask
the mother if she has any concerns.
Just because a baby is born on a certain percentile doesn't mean they
have to stay on it. There could be some settling into the centile that
is most appropriate for this baby over the next few weeks or months.

My second baby weighed 5kg at birth, and actually continued to go up on
the centiles!! I wasn't concerned because it was all breastmilk that did
it and I knew it wouldn't lead to obesity later. It annoyed the heck out
of me though the number of people who told me a baby that size needs
solids (well before 6 months) because breastmilk alone wouldn't be
enough. I wonder how they thought he got to that size in the first place
- and he didn't get nor need complementary food before 6 months.
Anyway my Buddha baby has grown into a tall, handsome young man who
barely carries an excess pound.

Do warn the mother though about the number of people who will tell her
he's too big to breastfeed.

Denise
