..marble-sized stomach, but then the mothers SEE baby glugging down 30cc
formula in about 10 minutes and sleeping profoundly for 2-3 hours.

When baby goes to breast, it's 15-20 minutes, sleep 10-15 min, to breast
again for another 5-8 min, sleep 10 min, back to breast again... or if I'm
not in the room that time, mom pulls out a bottle because baby "no se
llena" isn't full yet.

What I say and what they see doesn't match. They want baby full, content, &
sleeping. (Many times, baby is sleeping in mom's arms or those of another
family member, not necessarily in the crib.) Most commonly in the 2
hospital days, that's their perception. The RNs want that, too. They expect
1-2 stools and often press for the 2nd stool in the first 24 hours because
that's what they are used to seeing with overfed formula babies.

We have a high number of moms who wait to BF, either until they "have milk"
or until they are at home because they won't BF in the hospital. Could have
something to do with Vital signs checks, food service, maybe a blood draw,
Vital Stats person, Financial counselor, Picture lady, OB/MD visits, PedMD
visits, visitors, neighbor's visitors, room cleaning & bed making,
wheelchair person to take neighbor home, bring new neighbor in & get her
settled, RN visits for meds & other necessaries, maybe the Social Worker,
LC visit, going to discharge class, watching the 30 minute teaching video,
visits to BR, some need to be up and walking in the hall, neighbor has TV
on loud,... not to mention trips to Level II or III nursery if baby needs
more care... and oh, yes, "get some rest"...

Frustrating...

Phyllis
