There is a lot of supportive information available to mothers who are
returning to work. Some of it is put out by breastpump manufacturers like
Medela, who make a variety of pumps for different purposes. They usually
send cases of handouts to be given away--you can contact your closest
local person via their 800 number. I am not shilling for them, nor do I
get any financial commission for mentioning their name, I bring it up b/c
the name is well-known among mothers (they make the Pump In Style). You
can also look at LaLeche League and Kellymom and other
working/breasfeeding websites for information to give to your mothers. It
is important, as I am sure you have been reading, to emphasize to your
mothers that the pump can be a useful tool to express milk once supply has
been established and that they are to be used for missed feedings. Many
mothers pressure themselves to begin pumping "right away" after getting
home from the hospital, with concern that they must stockpile a large
quantity of bottles for when they are separated from their infants.
Reassure them that if they establish supply with exclusive b/f, tailored
to their baby's appetite (cue or demand feeds), they will be pumping at
work for the next day's feedings and need not worry about filling the
freezer. Also, for any mothers who need help convincing management that
they wish to exercise their right to pump on breaks, have them contact
their local LLL leader, as she will probably be most informed as to the
laws & statutes of your state.
