good morning friends,
i did a lecture on bf last year, i was able to get all the stats for
hospitals/birthing centers that are baby friendly. as of march 2001 there
were 15,000 hospitals or birthing centers world wide, that were baby
friendly, in the usa there were 31. not even one per state. there were a few
hospitals that had filed a letter of intention to become baby friendly. i
tried to find the stats quickly this morning, but couldn't locate it.

other interesting stats, as of last year.....
wic purchases 2.6 billion dollars a year of abm using tax payers monies. the
gross amount is $4 million per day. wic is the largest purchaser of abm in
the usa.

cost of NOT bf using 4 medical diagnosis, gastroenteritis, rsv, diabetes and
otitis media.......1.9 billion dollars annually in health care costs.

1995 Dr Miriam Lubbok calculated the potentional savings to the health care
industry. 12 weeks of exclusive bf would resul t in a net heatlh care savings
of $3.689 billion annually in the usa. savings average $600 per newborn.
using a hospital birth rate of 150 per month, times 12 months, times $600
equals $1,080,000 potentional savings for one medical center alone.

i have a listing of the hospitals/ birthing centers that are listing as baby
friendly as of 3/01. you can email me directly for this info.
i just tried the website with the info in the usa, but it is under
construction.
as i was preparing for this lecture, even i was shocked at some of the stats
involved.
