One guideline I heard that makes sense to me is that if the mom no longer
feels the effect of the alcohol, go ahead and nurse. If she still feels the
effects, use some expressed milk for this feeding and pump if she needs to
make her breasts comfortable or is concerned about her supply. As a
non-drinker, I don't know if this is effective or not. Does everyone feel
the same "effects"?

Daer Friends:
People say many different things when it comes to alcohol and
breastfeeding; these things are based on 'common sense' or values and beliefs.
The evidence (AAP and Lawrence) says that alcohol use is compatible with
breastfeeding. Perhaps we need remember that our concern is for the safety
of the baby, not because mom has had a drink or two, but because an inebriated
mom isn't safe to drive or take care of a baby.
