It is a myth* * that the lying-down nursing position causes ear
infection/./ Because human milk is alive and teeming with antibodies and
immunoglobulins, the baby who is breastfeeding is /less/ likely to
develop ear infections overall, no matter what position is used.

Aniansson, G. et al. A prospective cohort study on breastfeeding and
otitis media in Swedish infants. /Pediatr Infect Dis J/ 1994; 13:183-88.

Harabuchi, Y. et al. Human milk secretory IgA antibody to nontypeable
haemophilus influenzae: possible protective effects against
nasopharyngeal colonization./J Pediatr/ 1994; 124(2)193-98.

/Greetings! I'm wanting to respond to an article that was recently published in our local newspaper. Although the primary focus of the piece was on cosleeping, there was a comment in the article that mothers shouldn't nurse their babies lying down because it can "cause milk to pool in the child's nose and throat and lead to ear infections." I have always thought that the milk can go up the eustacian tube into the inner ear, however the antibodies in the milk can prevent and possibly even fight an infection. However a baby receiving ABM in a bottle could be at risk for ear infection. Before I respond, I would appreciate any direction regarding studies on this topic that either support or deny this thinking. Much appreciated, thanks in advance.
