I've found the following things to be true of teething babies and
breastfeeding:
1. Usually they only bite when they aren't really hungry anymore. (not
always, though-- I've seen some exceptions!)
2. However, if their gums are fairly numb when they go to the breast,
then they are less likely to try to bite.  Therefore, I have Mom freeze
baby washcloths and offer them to baby shortly before nursing.  Baby can
scratch his gums with the texture of the washcloth and numb them
somewhat with the cold.
3. I always tell moms to remove a biting baby and not allow him to
continue to nurse at that particular time (Offer the washcloth, then try
again in about 15 minutes.)

I'd be interested to know what the rest of you think.
