Pat has asked if the FDA has issued any warnings about E sakazakii in the
US. If you go to the following address:
_http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/inf-ltr3.html_ (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/inf-ltr3.html) you will see the letter
the FDA sent to all NICUs in the US warning them about the use on powdered
infant formulas. E sakazakii is an emerging pathogen that has started to be
recovered more and more in powdered infant formulas of all types. There are
about 5-6 law suits that have been filed in the US regarding the unfortunate
outcomes of infants who were infected with this organism through powdered
formula. One full term healthy infant I know of contracted meningitis from the
powdered infant formula contained in the discharge bag that was given to the
mother by the hospital. This baby suffered permanent brain damage. NABA has
written about E sakazakii at its website _www.naba-breastfeeding.org_
(http://www.naba-breastfeeding.org) . Some powdered infant formula packaging has started to
carry warnings about it not being sterile. Given the hazards of this formula
to all infants under the age of 4 weeks, it is always a wonder to hear
hospitals vigorously defending their practice of giving out commercial discharge
bags. The Risk Management Department in all hospitals should be put in contact
with the lawyers who are filing the formula law suits!
